What is Domain Suffix?
The domain suffix is the end of the domain name after the ‘dot’ (the .com part), usually offers and indication for what is the content of the website or for the type of organization the website is linked to. For example, commercial businesses, usually use domain suffix of .com, which means it is a commercial entity, governmental organizations use domain suffix of .gov, which means it is a governmental entity and stores, may use different domain suffixes but when using .shop, means it is a consumer shop.
How did Domain Suffix Started?
Originally developed at the ISI (Information Sciences Institute), which was founded by Keith Uncapher, Internet domain suffixes are what help identify domain names on the Internet. Below is a list of the most commonly used Internet domain suffixes or TLD (top-level domains) and their associated locations that are approved by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).
