Unique visitors are a marketing term for the number of distinct real human visiting webpages from the website during a given period, regardless of how often they visit providing additional information for the value a website provides.

Unique visitor for a website is detected and counted by Web Analytics for a real person, using the user’s IP address. If a user accesses a website from different IP’s on the same period, it could be counted as more than one unique visitor.

Traffic rating companies typically calculate unique visitors by monitoring actual usage of a group of volunteers to place and install a tracking system on their computer, then applying the results to to the Internet population.
